Technical Department
Reason for Joining the Company
I majored in biological engineering at university and worked in sales for a company that distributed cattle feed in my previous role. When I got married, I began searching for a new job closer to where I lived, and through the public employment service, I learned about the company. At the time, there was an opening in the General Affairs Department, so I applied. However, during the interview, the president suggested, "You might be a better fit for the Technical Department," and I was ultimately hired for that role.
In truth, routine work has never been my strong point, so being assigned to the Technical Department turned out to be an excellent decision. Had I been placed in General Affairs, I may not have been able to continue working for long. Looking back, I truly believe it was a fateful interview.
Before the interview, I reviewed the company's website to understand the business, but the work was highly technical and difficult to grasp at the time. After joining, I started learning everything from scratch.
Current Responsibilities and Motivation
In the Technical Department, we work on developing new materials used at construction sites and conducting various tests based on on-site requirements. After joining the company, I assisted senior members with development tasks and report preparation, gradually building my knowledge step by step. Tunnel construction involves working with natural ground conditions, which vary greatly from site to site, and things often do not go exactly as textbook standards suggest. This complexity makes the work highly engaging and worth researching.
Of course, tests do not always go smoothly, and development can take considerable time. One of the projects I was involved in from the very beginning was the development of a carbon-neutral Backfill Grout Injection Material, which took nearly two years before it was finally applied on-site. Seeing the results take shape and being used in actual construction was an incredibly rewarding moment.
Team and Workplace Atmosphere
I sensed it already during my interview, but our company is full of cheerful and approachable people. The distance between employees feels very close, creating an open and friendly environment. After joining, I was also impressed by the scale of the business. Rather than maintaining the status quo, the company actively pursues new challenges, which completely changed my perception of what a small-to-medium enterprise can be. With the president's strong commitment to expanding the business, I truly believe the company will continue to grow even further. Another major attraction is the flexible working environment, accommodating various styles such as maternity leave, shortened working hours, and four-day workweeks.
The Technical Department consists of four members, including myself, and we work as a team by sharing information closely among all members. Our supervisors always listen attentively, making it easy to express opinions and contribute ideas.
Going forward, I hope to deepen my understanding not only of the materials we develop but also of the overall shield construction process—from start to finish. I currently visit sites for testing or troubleshooting, but there are times when I cannot respond fully to equipment-related questions since it is outside my area of expertise. By becoming more closely involved with on-site operations and strengthening my technical knowledge, I believe I will be able to address such inquiries more effectively and ultimately contribute to developing even better materials.
What makes the work in the Technical Department so engaging is that no two tasks are ever the same. It is an environment where we can openly discuss challenges and overcome them together, and I look forward to continuing to work here with a sense of enjoyment and fulfillment.
