Technical Department
Reason for Joining the Company
I previously worked in research and development, and while exploring opportunities at materials manufacturers during my job search, I came across the company. The shield tunneling method used in tunnel construction was an entirely unfamiliar field to me, which in turn sparked my curiosity and made me want to learn more. When I attended the interview, I immediately felt that the company had a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Although I had applied to several other companies as well, I became increasingly attracted to the idea of engaging in manufacturing that supports social infrastructure—the very foundation of society. Because infrastructure remains in place long after its construction, I believed this kind of work would offer significant meaning and long-term fulfillment. At the time, I was also considering returning to my hometown in Kyushu, but ultimately decided to remain in Okayama and join the company.
Current Responsibilities and Motivation
In the Technical Department, we develop materials, conduct quality control, and perform on-site property verification tests. What I value most in my work is carrying out each test and reviewing every piece of data with great care. Even the slightest variation can affect on-site construction, so I make a point of working with precision and attention to detail.
Before joining the company, I imagined research and development to be work done mostly within a laboratory. In reality, however, a large portion of the role involves quality control, and it is not uncommon to visit construction sites for property verification tests. On average, I go to the site once or twice a month. There are many things that cannot be understood without seeing the site firsthand, which makes the work highly engaging. Witnessing our materials being used in actual operations boosts my motivation, and hearing directly from site teams about how our products are performing gives me a strong sense of fulfillment.
Team and Workplace Atmosphere
The Technical Department fosters an environment where we openly discuss and progress through tasks together. When I first joined and struggled to grasp the workflow, I felt comfortable asking questions to senior members and supervisors. The company as a whole has a very open culture, with strong collaboration across departments. For example, during on-site property verification tests, we work closely with members of the Construction Department and others to carry out the work.
The company also provides opportunities for employees to interact outside of daily operations, such as year-end gatherings and company trips. This year's company trip included a visit to the Osaka–Kansai Expo. Although participation varies depending on site schedules, these events offer valuable opportunities to connect with colleagues from different departments and branches.
As I have been with the company for only about a year, my first priority is to continue building experience through daily tasks so that I can eventually take on greater responsibility in material management and quality control. I also hope to challenge myself by proposing improvements, and ultimately, I aspire to be entrusted with large-scale projects in the future.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this work is the ability to see firsthand how my research contributes to society. From the moment I joined, senior colleagues and supervisors have provided attentive support, creating an environment where new employees can feel at ease and focus on their work with confidence.
